Celebrating Balance
The last month of Summer is upon us here in the northern hemisphere and I am really looking forward to fall and the cooler temperatures. The sun is already starting to go down earlier and we anticipate the changing colors of the leaves during fall.
When the Sun enters Libra on September 22nd this year, fall equinox begins. Equinox means “equal night” balancing the sun light with the dark night. Libra is the sign of balance and we gravitate towards seeking more balance in our lives as we look back on the year and close out the last few months of 2021. The weather gets colder, drawing us inside. The start of fall also welcomes Vata season in Ayurveda, ushering in colder temperatures, dryer air and a certain crispness in energy. There is an uptick in energy with Vata, more action and movement in our mind and bodies. The cold light air can decrease our resistance to disease and effect our immunity in a negative way. In the ancient science of Ayurveda, it encourages us to “balance” in the seasons by shifting towards a different dosha and in this case Kapha. This helps us find harmony in our physical, emotional, and mental bodies.
What is a Dosha? It is totally ok not to know. There are three Doshas in Ayurveda; Kapha, Pitta, and Vata. An easier way to explain it is that it is your internal bio-energy system and it can get out of balance, especially during certain seasons. Do you ever wonder why you love a certain season more than another? I am tri-doshic, my body is mostly a Kapha Body so therefore I LOVE fall and winter more. Why? Because Kapha is a counter balance to Vata.
Take this short and sweet quiz from Chopra Center to find your Dosha.
Speaking of counter balance, find harmony in fall and winter by moving towards the opposite of Vata. How you ask? Cook heartier warming meals of root vegetables, stews, and soups. Stay indoors more and take a good amount of down time for yourself. Restorative, nidra, or yin yoga are great options because they are slower, calmer and encourage peace - the opposite of Vata energy which is erratic, quick, and fluctuating. Find balance, by folding inwards for self reflection, even the shifting of less sunlight gives you permission to do so. Leisurely Kapha activity and foods will balance the changeable Vata energy.
